Ability Tracking, Parental Effort and Student Achievement∗

چکیده
We develop and estimate an equilibrium model of ability tracking. A school allocates students into tracks based on their ability and then chooses trackspecific inputs to test score production. Parents choose parental effort in response. We estimate the model using data from the ECLS-K. We use the estimated model to quantify the effects of allowing ability tracking, making proficiency standards more stringent, or punishing schools for having students below the proficiency bar – all three policies may change equilibrium tracking, school inputs, parental effort and student achievement.

Ability Tracking, School and Parental Effort, and Student Achievement
We develop and estimate an equilibrium model of ability tracking. In the model, a school chooses how to allocate students into tracks based on their ability and chooses track-specific inputs. Parents choose parental effort in response. We estimate the model using data from the ECLS-K. We use the estimated model to first examine the effects of disallowing tracking on school and parental inputs a...
متن کاملMore Is More or More Is Less? Parental Financial Investments during College
Evidence shows that parental financial investments increase college attendance, but we know little about how these investments shape postsecondary achievement. Two theoretical frameworks suggest diametric conclusions. Some studies operate from a more-is-more perspective in which children use calculated parental allocations to make academic progress. In contrast, a more-is-less perspective, root...

This study examines the relationship between various measures of parental and student expectations and aspirations and math achievement among Latino 12th graders of immigrant parents in the Educational Longitudinal Study (ELS): 2002 database. متن کاملCan the Epstein Model of Parental Involvement Work in a High-Minority, High-Poverty Elementary School? A Case Study
The literature has lauded parental involvement as an effective strategy to increase student achievement, but schools still struggle with how to effectively involve parents of color and low-income families. In an effort to assess the effectiveness of the Epstein Model of Parental Involvement in high-poverty, high-minority schools, the authors conducted a case study of an urban elementary school ...

In this volume, Betts and Shkolnik [Betts, J. R., & Shkolnik, J. L. (1999) The effects of ability grouping on student math achievement and resource allocation in secondary schools. Economics of Education Review, 19, 1–15] argue that studies that compare students in tracked versus untracked classes overestimate the impact of tracking on student achievement by not adequately controlling for stude...
